University of Mississippi High School Debate Tournament

The Warren Debate Union is seeking volunteers for the University of Mississippi High School Forensics Tournament on October 13-14, 2023.

The University of Mississippi debate team has a proud tradition of hosting a tournament for high school students to compete in a variety of debate and speech events. The tournament attracts hundreds of the best and brightest students from around the Southeast region to Oxford for a weekend of competition, education, community, and fun. High school debate and forensics are a prime opportunity for these students to develop public speaking, communication, research, and advocacy skills. The debate team is proud to offer this chance for students to develop these skills and get a glimpse of what campus life is like at the University of Mississippi.

However, this tournament requires enthusiastic volunteers to run smoothly. Our greatest need is judging. The tournament hosts several formats of debate in addition to more than a dozen forensics events. For each format of competition offered by the tournament, judges are required to evaluate the performances of the students and offer constructive feedback. We kindly invite University of Mississippi students, staff, and faculty to volunteer.

You do NOT need to commit to judging the whole weekend.
Prior expertise or background in debate/forensics is NOT required.
Online and offline judge training programs are available.
Volunteer judges will be provided with free food and refreshments during the tournament.

Requirements

Wondering if you should register to volunteer? Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions:

Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.
Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, we ask you not to register. We are doing all we can to align with best practices and keep our community healthy.
